In a comprehensive and leading role as architects, we managed and executed conservation projects on over 40 historic buildings and monuments across Cyprus. Our responsibilities spanned the entire project lifecycle, from initial full architectural documentation and historical/architectural recording to the evaluation of pathologies, assessment, development, and implementation of emergency interventions and prioritization of tasks. We engaged the full architectural documentation, historical, and architectural recording of the built heritage of medieval castles and towers across Cyprus: Preservation and Promotion of the Medieval Cultural Heritage in the Island Region of the Aegean and Cyprus. Furthermore, we undertook the design of the First Archaeological Park in Nicosia in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities, which involved developing sustainable conservation solutions and details, and designing proposed contemporary structures, uses, movements, materials, and landscape for the area.

This interdisciplinary project on the Church of Transfiguration, Sotira, Cyprus, is an ongoing collaboration undertaken by the Archaeology Unit of the University of Cyprus and the Cyprus Department of Antiquities.

The core investigation focuses on the Church of the Transfiguration at Sotera, where intensive research, encompassing the building’s structure and surrounding excavations, has unveiled traces of history spanning over 2,000 years. The findings are remarkable, with researchers identifying construction phases corresponding to more than three distinct earlier building structures. This multi-phase history is also visibly reflected in the surviving mural paintings within the church.

A significant challenge of this project lies in the meticulous process of identifying, differentiating, and sequencing each historical phase and the new architectural elements found. New clues are continually being discovered with every subsequent visit to the site. Due to the incredible depth and complexity of the recovered stratigraphy, this project offers an unparalleled opportunity to reconstruct the site’s complete chronological evolution, serving as an exceptional archaeological “time machine.”

LEVENTIS FOUNDATION

Archaeological site of Agios Georgios Peyia

This role involved the evaluation and documentation of the mosaics at the archaeological site of Agios Georgios Peyia, alongside the documentation of more than 80 Byzantine churches across Cyprus. We worked closely with a broad range of conservation professionals and other heritage specialists.
